Introduction - Han Z
Identity is the very essence of who we are. Glenn Colquhoun's witty and provocative poem Bred in South Auckland describes how he associates himself with 4 of the most common cultures in South Auckland. He makes the reader compare themselves to the stereotypes in the poem thus making them think about their own identity. Colquhoun's poem has made me realise that everyone is diverse and unique in their mix of cultures and that my identity is created by me not by stereotypes that people expect me to be like.
1st Body paragraph - Josh K
In Glenn Colquhoun's poem, he mentioned four different stereotypes of the cultures that reside in South Auckland. Despite slight exaggeration and sarcasm in some stanzas, Colquhoun's description is quite accurate of what we think and feel about others. For instance, a simple quote like "There is rust in the doors" is a quote that most of us would find quite agreeable with our thoughts of the Maori people being poor. The poem also talks about Asians, Polynesians, and Caucasians, making the poem feel personal and authentic to anyone who reads it. Glenn Colquhoun effectively showed and explained the different stereotypes of the citizens of South Auckland, and has made it understandable to the people of New Zealand.
